AUCKLAND, Jan. 22, A heavy sai'e on wheels containing £500 in ban'knotes was wheelecl out of the Princes Wharf office of the Auckland Launch .and Towboat Company late last night ahd carried away by thieves probafely using- a luotor truck. The sal'e was discovered this morning in Ihe entrance .ko Eden Park. All the money had lteen taken from. the sai'e which had a gaping- hole in the boitom. Two employees of the company are heavy losers, about lialf the £500 N being their money. Each Irattered about dhe-head with a rubber hose fillcd with lead hvo Chinese were robbed by two masked men in a house in Yelvcrton Terrace, the city, at midnight last iiight. The Chinese were robbed of money, gold .and jewellery to a total value of £1154. Iioth the Chinese are in hospitnl, but their assailants escaped. The victims of the assanlt were Char)ie AVong Chuck, aged 70, and Pong Hon, aged 48, a laundryman. The erirne east a gloom over the Chinese eommunily today whieh is tlie Chinese New Year. They regard it as a had dmen. The Chinese were surprisod* by the intruders and a desperate struggle ensued, Hon using an electric toreh as a weapon. Hon was overpowered when slruck on the head by one of tlie men whi'le engaged in a struggle with the other intruder.
