Otaki Council ffieets \ The monthly meeting of the Otaki Boroiigh Council was held on Wednesday night, the Mayor (Mr. C. F. Atmore) presiding. There were also present Crs. Young, Gimbiett, Hakaraia, Bartosh and Cook. Mr. C. W. Foster, surveyor, wrote relative to the widening of Arthur 1 Street and the sub-division of J motor camp sections, He said that the field work in connection with bhe former had been completed, and the latter would have early I attention. — To receive attention l wheh plan is available. I A letter from Mrs. A. Hillas, secreI tary of the Otaki Horse Club, asked jfor permission to hold a\ sports I meeting on the- domain, all profits j bo be for the proposed memorial • hall. The club would accept the t responsibility for restoring the 'grounds to order should this be 1 necessary, added the letter. It was 'pointed out that a resolution had beeh passed previously that horse ! sports be not allowed on the ; domain. This dated back to 1937, ! when horse sports were held on the ground and considerable damage had resulted. It was decided to ladhere to this resolution, and to 1 express regret that the application 1 could not be granted. ! Advice was received from the Horo whenua County Council that ! Crs. A. M. Colquhoun and W. Taylor had been appointed as its representatives to investigate river matters in conjunction with the borough council. It was hoped that the subject would receive early attention. Mr. N. J. McCormack made an ' offer under Land Saies Court valua1 tion for a section owned by the council in Kirk Street, adjoining his property. — To receive attention. The Horowhenua Marching Association wrote asking that a meeting be arranged „to consider the formation of girls' marching teams. Shannon, it was stated, had two teams and Foxton four, and competitions would be held at Levin on January 25. It was also hoped to hold the Wellington provincial marching championship at Levin on March 22, and it was , desired that Otaki enter a team or teams. It was stated that the association secretary, Mr. A. L. Dobson, had been written to, suggesting that a marching demonstration be given. This, he had agreed, was a wise thing, after, which names of intending members could be secured, From Mr. O. B. Nilsson, secretary of the Otaki Athletic Club, a letter was read thanking the council for erecting the fence on the domain and for cutting the grass. Both had proved of great advantage and were appreciated. It was considcred that the domain had never been in better order. — Received with gratification. i The Audit Department returned the accounts of the council, duly certified. The town clqrk, Mr. Alex Wilson received the congratulations of the Mayor and councillors for his cfficicnt work, it being pointed out that his accounts had been returned for ycars without a "tag." Menrion was made of the likelihood of Mr. Inia Tcwiata visiting Otaki bcfore proceeding overseas for further training in connection with his singing, and it was agreed, cspccially as he was an ex-Otaki resident, that he should be assisted. The council unanimously agreed to give assistance, and the niatter was left in the hands of the Mayor to further attend to. It was stated that the Old Pupils' Association of the Otaki State School was also helping. A request was received from ; residents of Babbacombe Avenue ; for the council to form a right-of- j way from the Avenue to Marine ! Parade. — Agreed to inspect- the I property before doing anything. Messrs. Harper, Atmore and Thomson forwarded a subdivisional plan for the council's consent, and also a road dedication for approval and acceptance in connection with land owned by 'Mr. A. C. Marshall. — To be given attention. The flooding of the Rangiuru Sfcream was referred to, and a suggestion was made that the member for the district, Mr. J. J. Maher, be consulted with the view to arranging for a deputation to visit the locality. It was decided to tender thanks to the Otaki Maori Racing Club for ■allowing the use of its machine to cut grass on the domain. Reference was made to damage dcne at the beach pavilion hathing shed, and it was deemed advisable to erect a notice board, asking residents to protect their own property, report acts of vandahsm and for assistance generally. It was decided that any person found doing dam- ? age be prosecuted. The follcwing report by the v-'crks committee was adept-ed: That the rest resort building and gate-s be locked between the hours of sunset and 7.30 a.m., and a notice board be erected advising that trespassers on the resort during those hours would be prosecuted; that Mr. W. J. Bailey's offer
of 30s for the grasls on the Riverbank Road Reserve be accepted; and that a Talbot's improved water main tapping machine be purchased and hired to plumbers for carrying out water work.
