SLIPPERY COURTS AT WAIPAWA
WAIPUKURAU, Jan. 16. Due to slippery courts following two days of rain many competitors played in bare feet for the opening games of the Korth Island, Hawke's Bay and Waipawa tennis championships at Waipawa today. The weather was iine tliougli overcast. The best match of the day was between J. E. Robson (Otago) and J. Barnett, top ranker from Dannevirke playing for Manawatu. Robson had the advantage in the lirst set, but after the second set when he was leading 3 — 0 Barnett drew level and eventually led 5 — 4. In the latter stages Robson broke througli his opponent's service to equalise at flve-all finally winning 6 — 3, 7—5. In the early stages of the game between the youthfui Aucklander, J. A. Barry, and D. Ormond (Waipukurau) Barry appeared to liave trouble with his footwork. He played the unorthcdox double-handed game aud in the rallies repJied equally well with his left and right liands.
