NO ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION THIS YEAR
NEITHER PROM AUSTRALIA NOR NEW ZEALAND Received Friday, 12.25 a.m. CANBERRA, Jan. 16. The Commomvealth Government will not dispatch ah Antarctic expedition this summer hut will d.eveiop plans for an expedition during the summer of 1917-48. This was announced tonight hy the Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley) who added that Sir Douglas Mawsdn woiild 'hd invited to join the planning committee for this expedition. The Navy Department had advised that there was no possibinty oi a quick Antarctic. voyage hy a naval ship this summer and that no ship was availahle capable of doing air reconnaissance. The length of the voyage was beyond the fuelling capacity of the average naval ship and if a ship were available there were serious difficulties in providing equipment, in particular special clothing for the men and special heating in the ship. The New Zealand Government had decided not to send an expedition this summer.
