CUP HORSES GALLOP AT AWAPUNI.
Candidates for the secoiid day at Trentham attracted • main interest at Awapuni yesterday morning when, in spite of overnight rain, conditions were -ideal for trainiug. The .highlight was a "sound trial by the Wellington Cup candidate Broielield over a mile and a quarter, while others who attracted attention were Cincture, Bockamii, Theiolyn, Yoltaic and Duplicity. Horses boolced to race at Trentham had the use of the course proper, with the pegs out 20ft, while the remainder of the fast work was done on the outside. The Cup candidates Broielield (Seiiars) and Langue d'Qr (JenkYTis) jurnped away in the vicinity of the mile and a quarter peg, and recorded 1.49 3-5 for the last mile. Tliey came home very well, the last three furlongs in 39sec, with Broielield appearing to have the better of matters. Although he will have to be taken on trust over two miles, Broielield will lack nothing on the score of condition when he parades for the big event on Saturday'. Duplicity (Aitken) displayed her usual brilliance while reeling off six furlongs in 1.17 4-5, the -last three in 40 3-5sec. _ Theiolyn (Waddell) improved on this by linishing too well for Flying Orders (Aitken) in 1.17 2»5. Argumentative (A. Waddell) accounted for Czarina (S. Waddell) over six furlongs in 1.21 3-5, the last three occupymg 40 l-5sec. . Riuk (Bowness) was always well clear of Hakim (Amey) throughout a mile and three turlongs, the last mile talcing 1.50 2-5, and the live furlongs 1.8 4-5. Hakim failed to kit out on the firm going and will not contest the Wellington Cup unless the track is easy. liockanui (Aitken) shaped really well in beating Prince AVanaka (Coilins) over seven furlongs in 1.32 4-5. Gay Stroller (Andrews) worked evenly over six furlongs in 1.21 4-5, the last three taking 41 4-5sec. A Smart Effort,
Yoltaic (llarris) was impressivc in .sliading Dileas (Amey) over a smart seven furlongs in 1.31 2-5, the last three being cut out in 39 4-5sec. It is intended to race the former on the third day at Trentham. Cincture (S. Waddell) pleased by the solid '"manner in which she eneompassed a mile in 1.50, the last three furlongs being run in 40 3-5sec. Areo (Sellars) had the bettef of Winning Ticket (Broughton) at the completion of a mile in 1.48 3-5, the last three furlongs occupying 40 ^3-5sec. On the outside of the course proper Tula (Saunders) was doing better than J'asper (Clutterbufck)' at the end of seven furlongs in 1.39, the last three taking 42 2-5sec. Broilyn (Ewen), who made a big imprfe'ssion by winning at his first start at Marton, had the mcasure of Lady Oratory (fcjaunders) at the conclusion of half a mile in 54 4-5 see.
