ENGLISH BETTING SENSATION
Oue of the strangest incidents in racing caused a -sensation in the betting rings at Lingfield, England, recently. Mehmanv, ridden by champion jockev Gordon ltichards, started an odds-on favourite, and won the Shipley Bridge Ilandicap from Roman Magic in the last stride. Wrongly, the race card gave tlie weight of Mehmany as 9.3, which she carried, although manv racegoers seemed to know that her proper Uurden should have been 9.6. When the "weighed-in" was announced by loudspeaker, the bookmakers paid out. All questions of betting wgre thereby settled, for the announcement of dividends is equivalent to the " All-right ' ' which indicates that the weighingroom formalities have been carried out. But the matter did not end there. Immediately after the M'weighed-in" was given there followed the delayed j news of an objection on technical grounds. It was late in the afternoon when the j stewards promulgated their ruling disqualifying Mehmany and depriviug her I owner, the Aga Klian, of the £700 stake. But her backers won their bets — even those made after the objection had i been lodged — and although the race and | the prize went to Roman Magic, his j backers were losers, except for place money on the tote„
