P-LAIN SPEAKING AT CONFERENCE. Received Saturdav, 12.46 a.m. MELBOURNE, Jan. 10. The parties to the iMelbourne gas strike were today ealled into a conference by Acting Chief Judge Drake Broekman of the Arbitration Court. At the conference it is understood some •plain speaking took ]>laee aftjr which certain proposals so far undisclosed. were made. The unions concerned are now eonsidering these and a decision is expected late tonight. Meanwhile- nothing has happened to justify much hope that the gas- supply will n'ot cease at midnight tonight. A number of women today volunteered to transport coal to the gasworks, but it is unlikely that any action along these lines will be taken.
