Rescuers Reach Surviving Trampers WEATHER DELAYS WORK

Rescnecj from the seene of the tragedy, oii M)obson Cflacier tho surviving" members of the party of Victoria ' University College trampers were brought to Dobson hnt at the head of Dobson Valley late this afternoon. The injured Left the hut at 9.30 tonight and are expected to reach Glen Lyon station at 2 o'clock tomorrow morning. Thfce stretcher cases will be transported immediately to the Timaru hospital by ambulance but the remainder of the party will stay at the station. The bodies of Stanley Allaway and Iloy Dixon, the two members of the party who lost their lives in the glacier on Wednesday morning, are at Dobson hut and will be transported to Gle'n Lyon by pack horse tonight. The injured,- all from Wellington, are: — Miss Vera Schwimmer, AVadestown, bruised leg. Ronald Smith, Island Bay, -injiired knee (previonsly not 'mentioned). Robert Barroivclough, The Terraee, bruises. . James Croxton, Kelburn Parade, bruises and shock. James Whitten-Hannah, Hines Street, New Plymouth, broken ^anlcle. Mrs. Mary Boyd, Karori, Wellington, escaped imhurt. Rain squalls and cold weather delaycd the rescne woi'k and a bluff of 200 feet necessitated the stretchers being lowered by rope. The rescne brought the injured climbors to the foot of Dobson Glacier late this- afternoon. The first message of the condition of the injured members of the party, was received at the Timaru poliee station shortly before 5 p.m., from radio operators, Messrs M. Johnstone and J. McKim, working under Police Sergeant C. L. Spencer. The operators, who were with the injured at the encampment at the head of the valley, relayed m.essages to a, seeond operator, Mr. C. E. Brittenden, at Glen Lyon station, and thence to Timaru. Valuable work was done' by bulldozers of the Public Works, cutting through shingle faees and clearing a 16 mile road from Glen Lyon to the head of the glacier. Trueks earrying the injured were foreed to ford the river on occasions. Btdldozers escorted them in case of accident. A request for further medical supplies was received hy the Timaru poliee this morning from the Constable stationed at Glen Lyon. The police cliartered the South Canferbury Aero Club's Tiger Moth for a seeond time and supplies obtained at. tlie Timaru Hospital were dropped at the encampment where medical aid is being given.
