FIVE INJURED IN CAR SMASH
NAPIER, .Tan. No eluifige has been reported in the condition of the five men who were injured when a motor car crashed into powcr poles supporting a transformer at. Awatoto, three miles from Napier, on the Napier-Hastings highway at 12.15 this morning. Those injured were: — E. BLOMFIELI), of Dunn's Road, Otatara, Southland; componnd fracture of the skhll ; condition critical. A. KAY-SMITH, of Hastings; severe ehest injuries; condition .very serious.
ALLAN HARYEY, of Otatara; faeial irquries; condition serious. W. KAY-SMITH, of Hastings; abrasions and shock; condition not serious. * COLIN Mc.CORMICK, 102 Fenwick Street, Hastings; injured ankle and abrasions; condition not serious. The Kay-Smith brothers had been staying at Windsor Park motor camp, Hastings, for some tirne. The men from tho Soutli Island. were on. holiday in the Hawke's Bay district, W. Kay-Smith was driving when the aecident occurred, and the party was ■travelling from Napier to Hastings. The car slewed aeross the road shortly after passing another car and strue.k the poles supporting the transformer with a terrific impact. The erash was heard by residents a quarter of a mile away, and brilliart flashes high-tension electricity from the transformer above added to the confusion of the scene." The ear was almost wreeked, with seats wfenched out and doors torn off. Pieees of wreckage were found 50 yards away. A passing motorist sent for the police and Dr. G. E. Waterworth. A St. John ambulance was summaned and the injpred, . men were remoyed to Napier Publie Hospital. This is the third aceident to have occurred on this stretch of highway within three days, _
