Lamb-Killing Record A record was established last week, when, for the first time, the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company's works at Horotiu killed 10,000 lambs in a day. Death of Jockey j An inquest was opened before the j Coroner (Mr. C. L. Mowlem) at I Palmerston North yesterday mornI ing into the circumstances surj rounding the death of T. J. Hastie, | a jockey, who was killed during the ! running of a hurdle race at AwaI puni on December 21. Medical evidence was given by Dr. D. C. L. Clay, of the Palmerston North Public Hospital, who stated that in his opinion death had been caused by severe crushing of the chest, inflicting extensive damage to the vessels and contents of the thoracic cavity. The inquest was then adjourned. New Year Bowliny The combined rinks tournament planned for New Year will commence at 9 a,m. tomorrow on the Levin Bowling Club's green, "and players of both the Levin and Central Clubs are requested to be on the green at 9.15 a.m. Owing to I the fact that four additional players are required to make up the number, any members desiring to participate for one day are asked to attend at 9.15 a.m. so they can be included in 'the draw. Holiday Accidents Only four road fatalities in New Zealand have been reported since Christmas Eve. Nevertheless the holidays road traffic has been the "neaviest since 1939 and so far this year it has been marked by fewer accidents than in pre-war years. Fracas in Hotel A fracas in a licensed hotel in Palmerston North on Christmas Eve led to the appearance of two young men before Mr. C. C. Marsack, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North yesterday morning., They were Ronald William Carlyle, aged 26, and his brother, Kenneth Alan Carlyle, aged 21, both of Palmerston North. Both pleaded guilty to the two charges against them. Ronald Carlyle was charged with assaulting the hotel licensee, Hubert John Davis, his brother Kenneth Carlyle was charged with assaulting the bar manager, Reginald Chevalier Avison, and both were jointly charged with being found unlawfully on licensed prem- 1 ises. Both ' were convicted and 1 fined £10 each on the assault charge and £1 each on the other charge. At the request of the accused, they were allowed three weeks in which : to pay the fines.
