NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 30. Assaults were made 011 two sleeping girls at X'cw Plymouth early last Friday morning, by a man who used a chioroform pad to quiet. the victims The intruder, in one case, had disconnected the telephone wires and cut off Ihe electric power. The father of Miss P. J. Cattley, "Devon Rtreet was awakened by se remus from his daughter's bodrooin at 3 a.m. ' and saw a man escajiing l'rom the house. Miss, Cattley 's room smelt strongly of chioroform and she aj)peared to ihe suffering' from the efCeets of Ihe anaesthctic. The second attempt. was made on a Napier guest of Mrs. S. B. Griffiths, Pendarves Street, abont an hour and a half later. Mrs. Grifiiths was awakened by the girl's screnras and saw a man disappearing from the house. Tlio gir) was in a semi-eonscious stale and the fuiues of the anaesthetic were noticealile. The man was chasetl but not caught.
