AUCKLAND, Dec. 29. Fulling out of a dinghy in which lie and soine companions were crossing the Northern Wairoa River last evening, u voung .Maori employee of the Publie Works Department, was drowned. Ile Svas Pat Allen, aged 24, married, of Tangiteroria, a smafl settienient abouc 20 miles from Dargaville. Allen was one of three Maori nien who, with a voung girl, wero returning to their homes on tlie opposite bauks of the river to the township. Ilalf-way aeross, Allen, who was sitting in the stern of the lioat, stood up and toppled iiito the water. One of liis friemls jumped in to the reseue but failed.
