CHRISTMAS NOT LOST AFTER ALL

AUCKLAND, Dec. 27. Although tliey "lost" Christmas Day when tlxeir ship crossed the international datc liiic tliis week, the officers and erew of the Canadian steamer Vinland were given a memorablc substitute on Thursday through the foresight and generosity of oue of the only two passengers. Mrs. Mary Speack, travelling witli her husbaud, Mr. C. R. Speaek, had preparcd for Christmas Day at sea and although defeated by the date line, she did not alter her well-laid plans. When the Vinland arrlved at Auekland today the sliip's niaster, Captain W. Willianis, sairl that before leaving Liverpool, Nova Seotia, for New Zealand, Mrs. Speack had brought two small Canadian iirs aboard unknown to him, and stored them in ice. When the Christmas festivities were being prepared the trees were carried on to the hateh cover and f rozen out. Tliey were then • presented to the officers' and crew's Christmas messes. In addition everv person in the ship, as well as the sliip's cat, was given a Christmas gift by Mrs. ►Speack.
