CHRISTMAS DINNERS RUINED
GAS FAILURE IN AUCKLAND AUCKLAND, Dec. 26. Christmas Day in Auckland was cold, grey and wet. This was aceepted philosophically and in a festive spirit, but housewives' goodwill to all men was gravely strained When the citj' 's gas supply flickered out between noon and oue o'clock. Ilalf-cooked turkeys ceased sizzling and housewives began to sizzle, and became thoroughly "browned off" when meals "were ruined. Aucklaild's most worried man Was the gas eompany's generai manager (ilr. R. Worley), who said absen-teeism among retort house workers on Christmas Eve caused the gas failure. Asked why the public was not warued, he said that past experieHce showed that, had a warning been given, there would have been a ru.?h on the supply and the gas would have failed earlier.
