POTATO GLUT IN AUCKLAND
AUCKLAND, Dci-. 2:1. Potatoes flooded the Auckland markets today and most city and suburban shops were offering them to all their customers m contrast with a few days ago when the housewii'e was lucky i! she managed to buy a shilling's worth. Several shops were offering 381 b. and 601b. sacks of potatoes for sale. A quantitv. of potatoes from the South Island, nearly 4640 sacks, was brought to Auckland on the Omana. These have now been unloaded although it was found that a large number had beconre rotten in the liolds. The majority of the potatoes at the markets todav carne from local and Pukekohe growers. The auctioneers stated that they thought the glut only temporary and was only caused through growers sending all their produce to Ihe markets before the Christmas and New Year holidays. They forecast that potatoes would again- be scarce in a few weeks ' time.
