OLD IDENTITY PASSES

MR. ARTHUR LQUIS WILLIAMS The death occurred at his home in Weraroa yesterday of Mr. Arthur Louis Williams, proprietor of Messrs A. L. Williams, Ltd., Levin. The late Mr. Williams had been resident in the .distriet for nearly 40 years, and his passing will be deeply felt by both the citizens and the business community. Born in Ballarat, Victoria, in 1865, he came to New Zealand with his parents in 1867, settling in Hokitika. Later his family removed to Stafford in which town he received his educar tion, attending the Stafford School. He served his apprenticeship with Rowecliffs, bakers of Hokitika. Later he was employed by the Union Steamship Company on ships plying' between Melbourne and. round the New Zealand coast. For some years Mr. Williams was an employee of T. Rowell, Vienna Pastrycook, Wellington, subsequently going tq Masterton. While in Masterton he married Miss Clara Jane . Rowell, of Wellington, who predeceased him in 1926. He later commenced business in his own account in Mauriceville, and from there went to Rona Bay, Eastbourne, finally settling in Levin in 1908, when he took over his present business from Mr. H. Wilson. He re-built the premises in 1913 and advanced it steadily to its present prosperity. He re-married in 1930. The late Mr. Williams was a prominent and popular citizen, being for many years a member ofthe Levin Racing Club and a member of the former Levin Chamber of Commerce. He was also a wellknown figure in the baking industry, being for many years a member of the Master Bakers' Association. He was for 42 years a keen member of the Masonic fraternity, being associated with the Linster Lodge, Wellington, and Lodge Horowhenua, of which he was a member at the time of his death. He le.aves his wife and eight children, seven by the first marriage and one by the second. They are Mesdames J. W. J. Jacob (Levin), L. Cromie (Napier), T. Hewitt (Levin), L. Howard (Otaki), and W. Hudson (Auckland), and Messrs A. R. Williams and R. L. Williams (both of Levin), and Miss Margaret Williams (Levin) . The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon.
