MARCHING TEAMS MAKE GOOD PROGRESS

FIRST APPEARANCE SHORtLY Since their formation some three weeks ago, the local ' girls' marching teams have made excellent progress. Already they have mastered i ne early movements and their drill is now of a very high stanI dard. It is expected that the teams i will have their uniforms early in !the New Year, and will be entering for their first competition a: the iHorowhenua A. and P. Show on IFebruary 1. It is hoped that a local j display can be' arranged before jthat date to enable the public of I Shannon to see the teams in actioa. On Saturday evening a special |bus carried the local girls to Levin i to witness the marching dispiays jheld in conjunction with the | sports meeting arranged by the Hhrowhenua Marching Association. There the local girls were able to see -Judd's team from Pahiatua, as well as the Caledonian and K.B H. teams in action. Sunday afternoon saw the girls out in force on the domain for their usual practice. During the afternoon a party from Levin comprising Messrs. J. Macfarlane (official coach), R. Murray (president) , D. Convery and Miss Shirley Smith (leader of the Caledonian team), visited Shannon to see the local teams. Mr. Macfarlane expressed pleasure at the way in which the girls had taken up the sport, and how quickly they had mastered the drill. In response to a request, Miss Smith acted as leader of one of the teams, and under her guidance they gave a magnificent display. Later in the day Mr. Macfarlane selectecl the leaders for the teams and they were given complete control for the remainder of the practice.

It is the intention of the local committee to call a meeting of parents of the girls early in the new year in order to form a parents' committee. It will be the duty of the parents' committee to supply two members to travel with the teams whenever they leave the town as a team. It is hoped that the parents will take an as active a part in marching as their daughters are doing. A dance in aid of association funds will be held in Shannon towards the end. of January.
