MARCHING TEAMS PARADE

MANY WATCH FINE OISPLAY Levin was definitely en fete 011 Saturday evening, when the Horqwhenuar Marching Association conducted a street march. Prior to 7.30 p.m. large numbers of citigeps had gathered at various vantage points, and as the Horowhenua Highland Pipe Band paraded to the post offfoe from the bahdroom in Bath Street, the numbers ' quickly increastd. The first team to march down the street was the K.B.H. and they fell in outside the Regent Theatre to await the return of the band leading the Caledonians, who at the conclusion of the march drew up alongside the K.B.fl. team for inspection. and judging of costumes. His Worship the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, patron of the association, who addressed the teams, said it gave him great pleasure to be able to compliment the teams on their fine display that evening. He paid a tribute to Mr. J. Macfarlane, who had been responsible for starting the teams in Levin. "The teams are a decided asset to the town, and something of which the citizens can be justly proud," continued Mr. Burdekin. "We look forward to Levin having at least another two teams in the near future/and the association is to be complimented on the work it is doing in getting the movement started right throughout the Horowhenua district." Mr. Burdekin then announced the points awarded by the judges, Mr. E. E. Tyrrell and Mr. M. Kehoe, who awarded the K.B.H. 56 points and the Caledonian 58. In congratulating the Caledonians on being declared the winners, Mr. Burdekin said that the closeness of the points awarded proved the eveness of the teams, and next time it would be quite possible he would be congratulating the other team for gaining the verdict. "I also wish to convey my thanks to the Horowhenua Pipe Band for turning out tonight and supplying the music for •the teams to march to," concluded Mr. Burdekin. The teams, headed by the band and followed by a decorated lorry with "Santa Claus" and the "Mystery Lady" on it, then paraded to Queen Street corner and returned to the Regent Hall, where all participants in the parade were the guests of the Horowhenua Marching Association at its plain and fancy dress dance.
