Jones stated today that a further important step in che post' offi.ee programme for the jxtension of the toll service was completed when a 12-channfel telephone" carrier system between wellington and' Palmerston North wa's out into service last Monday. _ Tho Minister went on to say that the new' system increased the nuinber of direct telephone chanriels oOtween Wellington and Palmerston North from 12 to 18,- and p'er-mi-tted: a reallocation of the exi'sting circuits between Wellington and; Palmerston sNorth as a result. During the next few days the number of circuits between Wellington on the one hand, and Paraparaumu, Otaki and Levin on the other, will be increased from two to three in' each ea'se. In addition Levin will haVe six circuits to Palmerston North in place of four,- and Paraparaumu will have two circuits to Levin in place of th§ existing single outlet. Otaki and Paraparaumu, said the Minister, will also be linked direct with Palmerston North. Fornl'erly these two places had no di,reet circuit to Palmerston North. ' The additional circuits would facilitate the disposal of the Christmas and summer holiday traffic, the Minister added, and woUld enabie the post office to provide a much faster toll service between the places mentioned.
