The cx])Iosion wrecked innny galleries, daniaged ventilation and put the punqis out of action.. Rescuers are working in foul air in masks with rising water washing aroupd their knees. Two luindred miners were Working in all parts of Ihe Lowca colliery when a violent explosion ea\-ed in the roof over a wide a roa in which 89 were working. Of these 24 have been brought out, one seriousl v and two slightl.v injured. The rest were unhurt. Rescuers cleared 390 yards of debrL and found oue body. They liavP an "qual distance to cover to elear the area where the other 14 men are believed • to ' be buried or trapped. , The cause of the explosion has not been uscertained, but the manager of the -ollierv said that liredamp seemed to liave been ignited.'
