MR J. J. MAHER WINS OTAKI SEAT

MAJORITY OF 44 VOTES Result of OfScial Count Mr. J. J. Maher,- the. National Party's candidate, has won the Otaki seat from Mr. James Thorn, the Labour candidate. The offieial count of votes cast at the election last week was cojnpleted at 11.15 a.m. today and increased Mr. Maher's election night majority of 11 to 44. Details of the voting are: — ' J. J. Maher (National) 6762; J. Thorn (Labour) 6718 Informal 92 Ma.jority for Maher 44 Included in the above figures were 764 absentee, 285 postal, 41 declaration and 159 service votes, and they went as*under: Maher Thorn Postal 164 121 Absentee 37,1 393 Declaration 22 19 Service 56 103 The election night count gave Mr. ' Maher 6191 votes and Mr. Thorn 6180. These are not the final figures as there are still a few service votes to come, but they cannot affect the result. In the 194*. election the preliminary count gave Mr. L. G. Lowry (Labour) 4621 votes and Mr. B. V. Cooksley (National) 4562, a majoritv of 59 for Mr. Lowry. There were two independents, who poll- ! ed a total of 863 votes. On the offieial count Mr. Lowry had 5131 I votes and Mr. Cooksley 4932, a Jmajority of 199 for Mr. Lowry. The independent vote was unchanged iby the offieial count. !• As a result of the change in electoral boundaries, the Otaki elec.torate became one of the largj est in the Dominion. The roll closed with 14,798 names and of jthat total 13,572 exercised their | right to vote. In the 1943 election : there were 12,299 names on the roll I and 10,997 voted. | The Otaki seat was won by Mr. ! L. G. Lowry for Labour at the 1935 election and was held by him until i his retirement just before the last I election. Prior to that it was rei presented by the late Mr. W.
