PREVENTING FOREST FIRES

WELLINGTON, Dec. 6. The Minister of State Forests, Mr. Skinner, stated today that the protection of New Zealand forests against flre Would be of a higher standard this year than ever before. Efficient means of detection and suporession were in readiness bv the Forest Service, to deal with the hundreds of flres which occu'rred during the dry months. The Minister, however, apoealed for full public co-oueration in the work of preventing flres and reportmg those which occurred. He emphasised that it was unlawful to light flres for land clearing without a permit in many snecifled areas during the summer months.
