MARCHING ASSOCIATION

ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING An enthusiastic meeting of the newly-formed Horowhenua Marching Association was h'eld, pn Friday evening at Mr. R. Murray.'s re:sidence, when' there was' a good attendance of members, including Mr. T. Downes, ' of Shannon. 1 It was reported by the'seeratayy that the Mayors of Levin, Otaki, Shannon' and Foxton had signified their intention of supporting the association, and would do all they could to help the* formation of tpams in their towns. Burdekin, was appoipted- p.atron for thp first' year, yflth the Mayors of the * other- thre'e towns ip the association's area as yice-presidents, the offlce of patron to be held by the fp.u,r Maypps in suecessive years. It was also reported to the meeting that Dy. S. J. ThompSpp was in favour of the association, 'and' had promised his support, Dr. Thompson having paid a tribute to Mr. J. MacFarlane in starting the teams and bringing them up to spch' a fiigh standard. Dr. L. J. Hunter also being in favour of the movement, it was decided to appoint these two gentlemen vice-presi'-dents. ■"'■■■" * ' : On the motion of Mr. T. Downes, seconded by Mr. W. Marks, it was decided that a letter be sent to the ! four boroughs in the association's I area, asking them to appoint a ' pepresejntative on the association. j Mr. j. MacFarlane was appointed the representative of the association on the New Zealand Marching' ^nd Recreational Association. It was decided, on the motion of Mr. D. Convery, that a trpphy be awarded. to thp team gainirig the most points in the street' march on Saturday evening. Members of the committee vc.re all in favour of assisting any- body which required funds, the chairpian, Mr. R. Murrayr stressin'g the. point that although it ' was a* marching association, any public body or sports body that required help and was in hepd of funds would have the support of the association at any time. "The marching teams are an added attraction to any gathering, and p!ur first aim is to ' work in copperation with everybody," co,ncluded Mr. Murray. It was decided that when a team is formed the uniform be provided by the team itself, and the monograms and banner be supplfed by the sponsors. It was alsd de.cidefl that any team which has difficulty in securing a sponsor, will be spbnsored by ihe association. The rules of ki'ndred associations are to he secured apd perused, and rules for the Horowhenua association drawn up and published. Miss A. Nicol, of the Caledonian team, was appointed a member pf the committee of ihe association. It was decided that a meeting of all parents of members of the 'two teams formed at present, and any parents of girls who wish to become members of teams that will be formed in the future, be held in the Bandroom, Bath Street, next Friday evening at 8 p.m. to form a parents' committee. At the request of Mr. T. Downes, members of the committee will attend a public meeting in Shannon on Wednesday evening tP explain the objects of the association, and to assist in the formation of teams in that town.
