entrance and always looked the winner after that. The liorsc was bought in New Zealand for sbmetliiiig like 5009 gulneas and has proved very costly.to the owner, Mr. O. R. Porter. It has been heavily backed on several occasious but has ruu disappointingly. At its previous slart as l'avourite in the Bendigo Cup it finished secoud to Skyway, and lias only won four races siuce being purchased by the present owner, three of wliich wero tuu at Flemington. The horse won this event at the same meeting last year. Mr. W. T. Hazlett, the New Zealand owner, who races extensively in Australia, and has been out of luck for many months, won the Catani Welter with Baffin Bay, trained by- F. J. McKay, the former jockey. Baffin Bay started at a long price and won well from Hartnell and Easly Love. This is the first win by Baffin Bay since April wlien he was suecessful in the Welter Handicap at the Williamstowit Cup meeting. Then he starfed at a long price. He has been verv disappointing to his owner with only two wins in numerous starts.
