FLOWER SHOW ENTRIES

change in closing time levin society meets . ✓ Exception to the ihanner in which entries were ac'cepted at the Levin Horticultural Society'S shows was takeh by. the Rev. E. T. King at,a recent meeting of the committep nf the societv.

Mr. King said the late hour up to which post entries were received resulted in extra work by the organisers on the morning of the show, and also in the upsetting of displays in order to make room for last minute entries. He considered that all entries should close at least on the afternoon of the .day before the show, so that an estimate could be made of the space available and thus prevent any interference with the layout of entries. People who waited till the last minute before entering their exhibits were displaying a selfish attitude. If by altering the time of closing a few entries were lost, they wouJ,d soon be made up. The shows were growing every year. Mr. King also considered that the adult entries were chokihg/ out those of the children. "Yo'u call for children's entries and then fipd you have no place to put them," he contended. Considerable discussion followed the suggested alteration to the closing time for entries. One member, when upholding the early closing of post entries, said it was noticed that many people would first attend the show,, judge the standard of the entries on display, then realise that they had much better themselves and return ' home to enter them before the judging period commenced at 11 a.m. This, she contended, was unsportin'g and ,not fair to the other entrants. The alteration would probably offend many people, but it would please many more.

The majority upheld Mr. Kings' contention, but thought the time suggested by him should be extended to 9 p.m. on the night prior to the show. It was also agreed that the practise of accepting post" entries should be maintained, but that the time fixed as the limit for ' their acceptance be 9.30 on the morning of the show, and that such late entrants be charged at double the normal rate. A motion to this effect was proposed by Mrs. H. B. Burdekin and seconded by Mrs. W. Lett, and was duly passed. A letter was received from the carniyal committee of the Levin branch of the R.S.A., requesting the use of the society's trestle tables for its forthcoming carnival. It was agreed that the tables be lent on the understanding that they were returned in good condition.

Satisfaction was expressed at the result of the recent fiower show and a motion of thanks was passed to all those who had contributed towards its success. Special mention was made of the work done by Mr. E. J. Stanley, manager of | the Boys'-Training Centre, and his boys, Mr. P. Young, who had acted ! as doorkeeper, the St. Mary's j Guild, which had lent the societv; its trestle tables, Mrs. Lett, Mr. J. Bowker and the stewards and judges. It was also decided that Mr. J. Petty be thanked for making available his compost bin fof exhibition. Mention was made of a mistake in the announcing of the winner oi the points prize in the native flora section, which was won by Mrs. D. Parsons, and not by Mrs. W. Duguid/ who was runner-up. A handsome silver challenge cup, donated by Mrs. West Egginton for cut blooms, and to be won by the person, with the highest aggregate points in the cut blooms sebtioii of the summer and autumn shows, was displayed at the meeting. Present were Miss H. E: -Bowen (president), Mesdames W. Lett, Lv J. Hunter, W. H. Hocking, H. - B; Burdekin, Hugh Walker and K. ZV Lynch (secretary) and the Rev. E. T. King.
