2000 LARGER THAN IN 1943

—Preft.t ARRor.ia.tinrL

» * — Bv. Teleararth-

GISBORNE, Nov. 28. ; A feature of the Eastern Maori polling that is puzzling the eleetoral authorities is the apparent large increase in the number of adult Maoris who claimed franchise. The vote on Tuesday was almost 2000 larger than the 1943 figure of 10,684. Reports ,are circulating of dual voting in some areas, and one circumstantial report states that a truck f ull of najtives travelled, from booth to booth in one populous locality and registered votes at each polling place. The party favour'ed 'by these tactics is not known, but this and other incidents will doubtless strengthen the demand for the compilation of a Maori electors' roll for use in national polls.
