1 SEVERAL SURPRISE RESULTS WALKER'S FINE CENTURY Several sui'prlses were recorded in the Horowhenua Cricket AssOCiation's Hall Shield competitioh on Saturday, when all games were played in perfect cricketing weather. The maiii surptises -Were Old Boys' defeat of Leyin and Coh lege A's defeat of Otaki A. These games were full of incident and the performances of some on Saturday has assured them of plaees in the future representative teams ColJege A Defeat Otaki A Otaki had firsr use oi the Wicket and after the early batsmen had gone cheaply against the bowling of Giles and Lambert, Rice came on and stayed to make the top score for Otaki with 39. Otaki niade a good total of 15? ruhs, Rice (39) , Garlick (37) and Garrity (29) being the principal run-getters. McClune was the most successful College bowler, taking five wickets for 43 runs. College went in with some misgivings against so formidable a total, but it was not long before they stood a reasonable chance of winning. Walker, batting aggfessively for nearly the whole inhihgsi unleashed some powerful drives and swings, and was finally bowled for 112. This is the second century this season and is really a credit-r able performance. Walker, who with Lambert partnered • an eight wicket stand, set a college reeord.. The partnership was finally dissolved at 102 runs, when Walker had scored 82 and Lambert 20. Walker's century included two sixes and 12 fours. The College total was 185. Bartosh was the most enterprising Otaki bowler, taking five wickets for 47 runs. College B Beat Shannon B College B defeated Shannon B by one run after declaring ■ for no wickets in the second innings. Shannon went to the wicket first and were soon dismissed for a .otal of 38 runs, Clough being the only double-figure batshian with 15. Dome and Hamilton bowled well to take six for 10, and two for two respectively. College's first innings gave them a 60 runs ' advantage, Allwood (33) and Tumer (18) being the most prominent batsmen. Peach bowled well to take three wickets for 21 runs. Shannon batted easier in their second innings, making 63, Clough again being top-scorer with 28 runs. Hamilton captured six wickets for the" low cost of five runs. College needed three runs to win and decided to bat- again. Turner had made the required number when the game was declared in favour of College. First Defeat of Season Paraparaumu suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday when playing Weraroa at Weraroa, Weraroa batted first and made a total of 86. Saunders (23) and Ryder (19) were the principal batsmen. Weggery took four wickets for 24 runs. Paraparaumu made 63 runs, 22 of which were supplied by Weggery, the not out batsman. Weraroa, in the second inznngs. compiled 88 runs for the loss oi three wickets, De Castro and France being the main contributors with 26 and 25 respectively. Paraparaumu had made 71 for seven at the end of time, Keogh being the main scorer with 18. Saunders took two wickets for 25. Win for Otaki B Otaki B defeated Shannon A on the first innings in their game at Otaki. In their first innings Otaki niade 112, Hakaraia (30) and Arnold (26) being the main- doublefigure scorers. Tippler captured five wickets for 16 and Mortimer two for five. Shannon replied with a total of 87, Roach (43) ahd Mortimer (14) being the main rungetters. Shernack took five wickets for 21 runs. Otaki's second innings score was 56, Windley with; 1.7 and Hakaraia with 15 , being the. oiiiy double-hgurej tsbbr efcf? again ' ' bowled i wickets for- 11 • ■shanh#iH batted better in the second innings to make 71 runs for the loss of two wickets. Levin Go Under to Old Boys Levin batted first and the first three wickets went cheaply to the bowling of Stevens, who was in top form. Levin compiled a total of 117 runs, Hudson being the only batsman to bat comfortably and make 49. Stevens took seven wickets for 33 runs. Old Boys replied with 160. Sciascia, who has struck form this season, was responsible for 69. Levin tried out 10 of their team members to shift the Old Boys' batsmen, Hudscn being the most successful and taking three for 19.
