GIRL GUIDES' CONCERT

Bright intertainfnent Parents and others interested in the girl guide mPVefnent filled the Horowhenua College assembly llall on Friday night for the concert staged "by the Levin Girl Guides. Songs by the choir, a wellpresented mime', an action song, rhythmic drill and a song and dance held the 'attention of the large audience throughout the first half. The majop portion of the second half was o'ccupied by a play depicting the guides being examined for their badges: .Those responsible for the concert are to be congratulated on the stahdard achieved, and one of the main factors in its success were the exceilent lighting eftects arranged by Mr. K. E. Alderson, of Levin. The concert proceeds will be used to help the three Levin scouts to attend the jamboree, to be held in Paris next year, and also to enable a donation to be forwarded to headquarters to assist with the cohstfuction of Guide Corner in the new Wellington Cathedral. The programrrie opened with the combine,d cohipanies, the First Levin and St. Mary's singihg "Good Neighbours All." This beihg a wellknown and popular song,. it was well received by the audience.

Following this item was a mime presented by members of the St. Mary's Cohipany, and~*those taking part rhust be Congratulated up'on the manner in which they presented' this portion of the evening's entertainment. Those taking part were: Marna Potter,- Dorothy Cheesman, Judy Todd, Jennifer Jack, Shirley Cheesman, Beth Wills, Joan Bagrie, Jocelyn Dumbell and Diana Marsh. The next item was "Run Rabbit Run," an action song by the First Levin Company. This was well staged and ably produced by Miss Chapman-Cohen. Those participating were: Audrey Nichols, "Landgirl," Eunice Hudson, "Farmer" and Jill Clarke, Elaine Ward and C. Chainey, "Rabbits." Then followed a rhythmic drill display by the members of the St. Mary's Company. The attention of onlookers was held by the exceilent display of well-timed actions. The final item in the first half of the programme was a pirate song and dance by the First Levin Company. The dances were executed in a manner which could only come from considerable practice. Taking part were: Raemar Chapman, Jean Jacobs, Eunice Hudson, Lavinia Hayfield, Alison Lindon and Nan Robbie.

Following an interval the major portion of the second half was devoted to a play, the scene of which was laid in a garden where guides wer'e being examined for their badges. Songs, dances and a play entitled "Mr. Bennett's Little Joke," _ taken from "Pride and Prejudice" were all cofnbined to weave this rather involved play into a comprehensive story of badgewinning in the guide movemenf. The stage settings and "props" helped greatly towdrds the success of this item, and the portrayals given by the leading characters showed that they had been well chosen for their difficult tasks. Songs used in the presentation were "Strawberry Fair," ."Come LasseS and" Lads" and "Gossip Joan," all sung by the members of the Levin Company. Three dances,

a rnmuet, a folk dance and a doll dance were also used to illustrate pOrtions of this presentation. The east was as follows: "Patrol Leader," Audrey Nichol; "Mrs. Bennett," Margaret Way; "Mr. Bennett," Maureen Haggerty; "Lizzie," Raemar 'Chapman; "Lydia " Pam Marshall; "Kitty," Judy Todd; and "Mary," ,Jocelyn Dumbell. The dancers were: — Minuet: Eunice .Hudson, Pam Marshall, Patricia Lindon, Maureeh Haggerty,D'oreen and Jean Jacobs, Caroline Chapman and Alison Lindon. Doll dance: Caroline Chapman (Dutch girl) , Jill Clarke (sailor) , Patricia Lindon (Red Riding Hood) and Elaine Ward (golliwog). Folk

The humorous touch of the evenmg was provided in the guide version of "Cycling in the '90 's." This was presented by Pam Marshall as "Daisy" and Eunice Hudson as a "Ma-n," and was taken from the old popular song, "Daisv Bell." During the interval, Mrs. M. I. Kirkcaldie, district president, thanked ail for attending and making the evening such a sucCess.. Mrs. Kirkcaldie announced to what purpose the proceeds would be used and read a telegram from Mrs. Turbott, the provincial president, who, though unatfle to be present, wished the guides a successful function. Mrs. 'Kirkcaldie also thanked Mrs. Maher for the many hours she had spent with the girls as pianist, Miss A.. Browning ,for training the girls in their singmg, Mrs. A. Yor'stoh for help With the dances, Mrs, §. J. Thompson for her help and interest, Michael Walker for help with the scenerv, Mr. W. W. Benfell the stagemanager, Mr. J. B.
