New Zealand Army The adjutant-Generai, Brigadier K. L. Stewart, will be visiting the main centres from today to exjrlain conditions in the New Zealand regular forces To intending applicants. He will visit Wanganui, Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Invercargill and Dunedin this week, and, if necessary, will also visit Timaru and Blenheim. Meat in Bi-itain Mr. F. A. Hellaby, managing director of R. and W. Hellaby, Ltd., who returned on the Ruahine, said the general opinion in Britain was ithat the meat shortage would be i overcorne after 1947 and he was convinced New Zealand should reestablish publicity and advertise New Zealand meat. Under control the identity of New Zealand meat j had been lost and it was necessary to take steps to repair the position as soon as possible.

Sociai Security and Maintenance I A decision that the Sociai Security Commission was not empow'ered by the Sociai Security Act 'to obtain a variation of a maintenance order increasing the amount payable by a husband for the maintenance of his wife was given by Mr. J. D. Willis, S.M., in a reserved judgment. The decision was based on a complaint by a maintenance officer (Mr. E. J. Mosley.) on behalf of . the Sociai Security Commission, for variation of a maintenance order against the husband by increasing the order.

Walter Nash gave an election address he was presented with a pound of butter from Bulls, described as a unique perforniance. Home to Stay This time I'm back to stay," said C. S. Dempster, the noted New Zealand cricketer} when he arrived at Wellington on the Ruahine from jEngland where he served during the v/ar in the Royal Armoured Corps. He admitted that he still enjoyed cricket enough to believe that it was quite likely he would $ay again in New Zealand. Dempster intends to establish a business as .manufacturers' agent in Wellington. It is the same company with which Don Bradman is associated, Bradmap being the manager of the Austfalian br'anch at Adelaide.
Large Sunspot Group More magnetic elfects and possibly aurora and radio disturbances can be expected within the next few days. The director of the Carter Observatory (Mr. I. L. Thomsen) has been watching the advent of a large sunspot group on the eastern edge of the sun. It is now approaching the centre and is growing rapidly. There is a long, complicated stream of sunspots of an approximate length of 172 000 miles and in the grdiip there are 51 separate nuclei. "There is a distinct possibility that the' present condition will produce eifects on the earth," said Mr. Thomsen. "The disturbances will probably' take place between November .25 and November 27."
