SUPERSONIC AIRCRAFT

Received Eriday, 8.25 p.m. WASHIN.GTON, Nov. 21. The Army Air Forces announce that the supersonic aircraft Bell X5-1 will make its first p.oweryd flight between December 1 and 15. The craft is designed for a'top speed of'1700 miles an hour at 80,000 feet and will use an alternate engine for the initial tests at 80 per cent. sonic speed pr 600 miles an hour. The plane will eventually be powered with a rocket engine with a ©6000-pound thrust. One reason why the plane is itnable to approach full speed initially is beeause friction heat will melt the windshield for which special glass is being developed.
