DENTAL TREATMENT UNDER SOCIAL SECURITY
OAMARU, Nov. 21. The Minister of Health, Hon. A. II. Nord meyer, aiiiiouiiced today that the .Soeial Security Dental Benelits Regula tioiis just gazetted, aimed at prov'iding free dental treatment Tor vouiig people up to their nineteenth birtlulay. A comniencement was being made witn those children leaving school and passing from the care of the school dental clinic. Arrangements were being made for the continuation of their dental treatment at State dental cliiucs oi* by contracting dentists at the cost of the Soeial Security Fuiul. Owing to the present shortages of the dental service,' it would not be possible to exteud. dental attention at once to all children up to 19 years of age and provision was made in the regulations to fix from time to time, the age groups in which children would be. accepted for treat-' ment. .As further dental personnel becauve available and further Ktate dental elinies were established, the age group would be raised until all. children up to 19 years were included. It was estimal cd that about 30,000 children would be included in tlie first age group to be accepted for treatment. When tlie plan was fully devolopod, Mr. Nordmeyer said, most of the necessary treatment would be undertaken by State dental c-linics. In the mcantime arrangements were , Jieing made to have treatment earried out b.v privatedentists who could, under the regulations, enter into contracts with the Minister for this purpose. Satisfactorv fees for the range of dental treatment proposed had been fixed in consulta ti on with the New Zealand Dental Association. Contracting authorilies such as the Dental School of Otago University and dental ilepartments of publiliospitals, could also participate. Ste|is would be taken imuiediately to mahe the necessary contracts with thosr dentists who desired to undertake treat ment under the regulations and ii waexpected that these would Pe finalised in time to enable treatment to lm eommenced soon after the Christmas and New Year vaeation, probablv from February 1, 19 17.
