RAISING OF BASIC WAGE
— TWELLINGTON, Nov. 21. Local bodies in the Hutt Valley are being asked to agree to approacii the Stabilisation Commission with a request that they should be pennitted to raise the basic wage of their labouring emploj-ees. The Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. An drews, said today that this had been made necessarv by the acute shortagt of men. While industries in the area were offering much higher wages, tlu proposed new weelcly rates of pay are £(i 10s for basic labourers to be termeii semi-skilled local body labourers, and £7 for truek drivers, All other eni: ployees are to be ad'vanced to prevenl anomalies but not necessarily in pro portion. My. Ajidrews said it was plajined that the trade uniops should fiupport the employers jn their representations.
