CHRISTMAS RAIL TRAVEL
NO RUSH FOR SEATS AT LEVIN Though stated to be not as heavy as last year, holiday bookings at the Wellington railway station have been increasing steadily since they opened last week. Under the month in advance system, reservations opened yesterday for December 20, the Friday before Christmas. All first class accommodation on the Auckland trains was booked early in the day and the only second class bookings still available were for the relief trains leaving Wellington at 1.50 and 3.42 p.m. There was a steady demand for seats on the Napier, Gisborne and New Plymouth trains. The stationmaster at Levin Mr. D. Hay, said yesterday that although there was no great rush to secure seats, local residents were commencing to avail themselves of the month-in-advance sj'stem. He expected that within the next few days there would be an increased demand for seats on trains leaving on the date of the ^commencement of the school holidays," and the days immediately preceding Christmas Day. Applications are open at the Levin Station for reserved seats and^sleeping berths up till January 12, 1947, and must be lodged up to a calender month and two days ahead of the proposed date of travel. Similarly, applications for bookings for returned journeys to be made on or after January 13 may also be lodged.
