The city editor of the Daily Express cstiniates that compensation payable oy the Government for taking over the railways and canals under the i'ormula announced by Mr. Barnes in the Commons, will be in the neighbourhood of £1,000,000,000. He adds that railway chiefs had hoped that compensation would be based on the valuation of fixed assets which they claim would cost £2,000,000,000 to replace today.
