LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

"D.S

SOCIAL SECURITY TAXATION Sir. — I notice that to keep the social security services solvent it is necessary to hnd £35,000,000 for one year. As 1,750,000 people have to subscribe this, a little simple division reveals that every man, woman and child in the Dominion is called on in some form or other to provide nearly eight shillings a week or something like £20 a year each. Nobody can possibly deny this. Now I have two neighbours, one with eight children and the other with Severn I have six children, making 21 children in all, and with the parents added the total is 26, one parent being deceased. If all our children were entitled to tbe ten shilling weekly benefit, we would receive £10 10s a week between us, but as 26 people (21 children plus five parents) would be finding eight shillings a week — a total of £10 8s per week— we would receive the magnificent nett sum of two shillings to spend on the whole 21 children. Perhaps Mr. Maher or Mr. Thorn would be good ' enough to set me right if my calculations are amiss. Yours etc..
