SPORT GRANTS CRITICISED

Criticism of the niethod by which grants were being made by the .Government to sports bodies from funds provided under the Physical Welfare Act

was expressed at a meeting of the Auckland Council of Sport. The president, Mr. S. A. Cleal, said that an independent body should be set up to maka the alloeations aud that an anuual deadline should be established for applieations. The council was not satisfied that the present systenx was not liable to abuse. It was stated that £25,000 had been provided in the last Supplementary Estimates for grants by the physical welfare branch of the Department of Internal Aft'airs. There was a danger that funds niight be exhausted early in each year if a specilied date whs not set down for ail applications to be considered. The council resolved that the administration of the fund should b'a in the hands of an independent body set up by the Government, that applications should close .at a speeified time, and the alloeations should be made annually. It was decided that a deputation from the council should meet the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, to-day, when the resolutions would be presented to him.
