Flower Show in Levin The Levin Horticultural Society's summer show was opened this afternoon in the Regent Hall by the Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin) and attracted many visitors. Despite the adverse season, the exhibition is a most attractive one. The dispiay will be open again this evening. Sanatorium Report "Have you anything to report, other than what has appeared in the Press, regarding the Western Districts Sanatorium site?" asked Mr. A. E. Mansford of the chairman of the Palmerston North Hospital Board at the monthly meeting yesterday. The chairman. Mr. J. A. Nash, moved that the meeting go into committee and then gave his report. "If We Walked Out" "We .were elected to this council until May next, which was to be the end of our term, and what would happen if we walked out then," asked Cr. F. E. Parker, in referring at last evening's meeting of the Levin Borough Council to the extension of the life of local bodies from May to November next by recent amendments to the Local Elections and Polls Act. "It means that the present council will have to frame the estimates for the new council." Lodestar Aircraft It is understood that two passenger Lodestars, bought in Australia for use in New Zealand by the National Airways Corporation. are to be flown across the Tasman shortly. The chairman of the corporation (Sir Leonard Isitt) stated that he could not comment because he was not in possession of the full facts, which would be reported by the acting-manager of the corporation (Mr. Clarke) who was returning to Wellington today after a visit to Sydney. Bantams in Sparrow's Nest A pet bantam, owned by Mr. Wynn Stanbury (Little River) , recently laid its eggs in a sparrow's nest in a fir tree near his house, states an exchange. His family was curious to see how the young bantams, when hatched, would be brought to the ground. The mother bantam accomplished this task easily. She tucked the young ones under her wing and brought the brood of seven safely to earth, one by one, hopping from bough to bough until she reached the ground. Newspapers Damaged "The taking of cuttings from newspapers and periodicals with- ' out applying for permission still continues," said Mrs. M. Whitaker, librarian at the Public Library, in a report to this month's meeting of the Levin Borough Council. "No doubt the fact that the general election is soon to take place accounts for much of this," the report proceeded, "but it is annoying for readers to find paragraphs . which they wish to read missing. Pilfering of magazines from the tables is another nuisance; two current magazines were stolen on ' Tuesday last." Protest at Mail Delay Mention of the delay in mails between Levin and Hawke's Bay ' was made at a meeting of the Levin Borough Council last evening by "the Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin). He said he had received a letter ! from Hastings which had taken five days to reach Levin, while only on two days of the week was it possible to get correspondence through in under three days. No mail bag ; for Hawke's Bay was made up in Levin, and all correspondence had to go to Palmerston North to be forwarded on. The council decided ; to protest at the delay, and request that a mail bag be made up at ; Levin. ' Young Farmer's Death A young farmer of Kauri was found dead on S^turday evening. He was Mr. A. H. Trigg, aged 29. When Mrs. Trigg and a neighbour returned from Whangarei they found the cows had not been milked. Mr. Trigg's horses were standing where he had been ploughing and Mr. Trigg was found lying face downwards in a furrow. It is believed that Mr. Trigg fell in an unconscious condition and was asphyxiated in the furrow. At an inquest a neighbour said that Mr. Trigg had been ploughing in rough coimtry and it was possible the plough had struck a tree stump, the plough handle strikihg him in the stomach. A returned serviceman, Mr. Trigg was a brother of the late Flying-Officer L. A. Trigg, V.C., D.F.C., R.N.Z.A.F.
