ATHLETICS AND CYCLING
PREPARATIONS FOR SEASON There was a large attendance at the Otaki A.A. and C. Club's mee*> ing on Thursday evening last, wheti the president, Mr. Fred Edwards, presided. It was reported that interest vas taken by members in the recent Palmerston North-Wellington road race, assistance being given as desired. Mr. Cook advised that the club's application to the Otaki Borough Council for the use of the domain for the coming season had been granted at a fee of £3. • It was desired that as ,many members as possible form themselves into a working bee for u e purpose of ground improvemen", it being stated that a large ami'iiu of work was necessary. A roller was needed on the track, but in this it was considered that the Otaki Borough Council would give assistance. It was stated that the council desired to see the balance sheet of the club, it being stated by club members that only £1 ls had -een given to the council. This was duc to unfavourable weather, cons'.der ably reducing profits at the annual sports gathering. The matter of the erection of a fence was considered and Mr. Cook, as a member of the Borough Council, said he thought this matter would be satisfactorily settled. It was intended that members oi ihe council's works committee and representatives of the clubs using the domain meet on the ground and discuss the matter, with a /iew to an amicable arrangement. Messrs. Edwards (athletic club), Cahill (cricket), Stevens (football) and Blomfield (softball) would be the representatives of the sports clubs. It was pointed out that topdrcssing had been carried out, and ' would be an improvement, but for a time it would interfere with tr>e cycling track. It was hoped tnat ihe top-dressing wouid soon be worn down, and it would then prove an advantagc. It was stated that cyclists after a race damaged the cricket pitch by carelessly throwing their machines down, thus making holes. After discussion it was decided to point this out to cyclists, and at the same time stake off the cricke-. pitch. It was mentioned that at Petone cyclists were kept off the oval, and some members saw no reason why the same should not be in force at Otaki. It was hoped that grass cutting would be done on days which would suit both the members of the club and the cricketers. The opinjon was expressed that Tuesday would be the best day. A letter was read from the Levin Club soliciting support from the Otaki Club. It was unanimously decided to give this wherever possible, while it was stated that already Otaki had visited Levin. It was hoped that the two clubs would give support to each other, and that the Levin Club would ultimately hold sports on Monday evenings, which would suit Otaki, who would race on Wednesday evenings. It was agreed that a number of jerseys be secured, these to be in the colours of the club — black, with green sash from shoulder across to bottom of jersey. It was decided that the first sports meeting of the club be held on December 4. The nomination of a representative to attend the outside sports meetings was held in abeyance. The president reported that he had tentatively reserved the Te Iloro Hall for a dance on Anniversary night, and his action was endorsed.
