LONGSWORD'S SUCCESS
Dymondy Wins Sprint Some really outstanding pcrlomiances were witnessed on the opening day oi the Feilding Jockey Cluh's spring meetmg on Saturday, and the success oi jbongsword ip the principal event, the Manchester Handicap, was regarded as an excellent New Zeaiand Oup triai. A candidate for the Stewards', the New Plymouth-trained Dymondy was rcsponsible for a very attractivc ettort in easily wmning the Flylng Handicap, while in the minQr class Awaroa Streain proved liimseli' above the average by scoring his third successlve wm in briiliant style. There were no outstanding surprises during the day and the l'avourites were well to the ,'f'ore. Although the weather was showery, the course was in excellent order. Therc was a good attendance, and the totalisa tor liandled £68,619. A Close Tussle The warni favourite Abdicate earried his supporters through iu the Waituna Hurdles, but hc had little to spare at the iinish from the outsider Par Avion, who battled on ganiely after attempting to lead throughout. Passing tlie stand the first time Par Avion was showing the way to Nanook, Red Glare, Rink, Tid-Apa and Abdicate, the rear being brouglit up by Peaeh King. Going along the back the leader increased his advantage to three lengths from Red Glare, with Hasten moving up, Nanook, Rink and Abdicate following. Abdicate made a fast move roundiug the turn to closely follow Par Avion into the straight, Hasten being handy and then a gap back to Red Glare and Rink. Once over the last hurdle Abdicate gradually wore the leader to gain a narrow victory. Hasten was a moderate third, followed by Rink, Red Glare and Tid-Apa. Mary Jo fel! at the third t'ence. An Easy Win The Aorangi Trial Plate proved easy for the well-backed Floral Dance, who canie awav over the fmal stages to win by a substantial margin. 1 Beau Son was first to show out, and passing the half-mile was attended by Cinereous, Yalliere, Floral Dance and Mata ra. Turning into the straight
Floral Dance was closely followmg - Beau Son and Cinereous, witli Matara heading the others. Wlien asked for an ell'ort, Floral Dance strode away to win coinfortably from Beau Son, who just held off Variant Night for second. Matara was fourth, and then canie Cinereous, Bonifort, Commereial and Sheilwyn. Interesting Contest In wiuning the principal event, the Manchester Handicap, the topweight Lougsword was responsible for a splendid New Zeaiand Cup trial. W. J. Broughton had him near the front throughout and he actually appeared Lo have the race in safe kceping a long way from houie. Beliave Avas the early pacemaker from Morry Robin and Lougsword, Flying Ace and Langue d'Or appearing Lo strike trouble passing the stand and losing a little ground. Flying Ace quickly recovered and dashed into the lead enteriug the back stretch froin Behave, Lougsword, Merrv Robin and Imperial, the rear being brouglit up by Catterick Bridge. Passing the halfmile Flying Ace eontiuued to mahe play l'roiu Lougsword, with imperial, Behave, Langue d'Or and Hakiin following. Roundiug the tuni Lougsword col lared the leader, with Imperial, Langue d'Or and Hakiin elosing up. Although imperial threw out a strong challenge, Lougsword had little difiiculty in liolding him to win impressh ely. Hakiin canie with a late run to take third from Flying Ace, and then followed Langue d'Or, 'Behave and Catterick Bridge. A Good Effort ! After being oue of the slowest ,to nio\e and then meeting with a eheck in the early stages, Colorado Maid had to register a good periormance to win the Feilding Juvenile Stakes. Petre Mar began best, but Blithe Spirit rau up sniartly to join him in the lead from Martianair, with Kumari and Colorado Maid heading the others. Blithe Spirit, Petre Mar and Martianair were in liue roundiug Ihe turn, but once I straightened Colorado Maid quickly settled the leaders, and slie went away to win coinfortably from Full of Fun, who linislied on to liead off Blithe LSpirit for second. Kumari was fourth, followed by Martianair, Baccarat and Petre Mar, who stoppcd badly. Outclassed Field
Finishing brilliautly Dymondy spreadeagled the opposition over thc final stages of the Flying Handicap and .his perforinanee definitely brouglit him iu line for the Stewards' Handicap. Flying Ord'ers began best. but, passing the half-mile Cot-Case and Blue Cliips were disputing the lead from Flying Orders, Foxella, Dymondy and Peter Gazelle. There was no change in the order rounding the turn, but once iu line for the judge the leaders compounded, and Dymondy then dashed to the front to go on and win with ridiculous ease. Tidelass flashed up [over the last bit . to deprive Flying Orders for second, and then came CotCase, Peter Gazelle, Foxella, Sir BradI bury and Blue Chips.
Topweight Scores The topweight Breezealong eompletely outstayed the opposition in the Kowhai Hack Handicap and, considering her reeent good form in open company, was at surprisingly good odds. The early pacemakers were 'Top Drawer and' Tortago, with Silver Ball, Sailor Boy, Sari and Skilled following. There was little alteration entering the back stretch, but passing the half-mile Breezealong made a fast move from the rear to join the leaders with Sari, Marshall Cook and Prince Wanaka being the most prominent of thd others. Breezealong was the first to turn for home and she went on to win unchallenged from Sailor boy, who just held off Sari for second. Prince Wanaka was a moderate fourth, followed by Matawene, True Friend, St. . Hilton and Eloge.
Brilliant Performance Finishing with an electrifying run in the straight after being left many lengths at the start, Awaroa Stream put up an amazing perf orcance to easily win the Fitzroy Hack Handicap. His win coinpieted the liat-trick for the Stratford trainer J. G. Farrell and gavu /the apprentice R. Urwin his third success for the day. When the barrier rose Awaroa Stream failed to move off on terms, and Colopier soon took up the running from Iron Duke, Indira, Gengliiz Khan and Superium. Racing to the turn Indira was on terms with Colopier, the pair being closely followed by Iron Duke and Gengliiz Khan, with Prefa heading the others. There was no change iu the order entering the straight, but at the distance Awaroa Stream came fast from the rear and went on to win going away. Prefa battled on to stall off Balclierrie for second, with Colopier, Emerge, The Denbigh and Baruch close up ncxt. Success oi Favourite After being well placed throughout, the favourite Gay Stroller stayed on in good style to score a narrow, but decisive victory in the concluding event, the Kiwitea Handicap. Blue Tie quickly worked to the front and led past the half-mile from Po Marama, Gay Stroller, Tumere and Stony Broke. The leader dropped ont before reaching the straight, and Gay Stroller was left in charge from Sir Wina and Tumere. Although Tumere threw out a determined challenge over the final stages, Gay Stroller responded well to liold his advantage to the judge. Big Money came from several plaees back at the turn to be a good third ahead of Stony Broke, Po Marama, Matador and Sir Wina.
