The fact that the Saturdav meeting urranged itself, is regarded as encouraging while 1 delegates, after today 's meeting, seemed more optimistic tlian for several days past. Authoritative sourees declared that Mr. Molotov, who previously was unvielding, seemed to be negotiating in earuest now and hopes are high that an understanding will be reached. Alr. Byrnes entered today ;s meeting prepared for a shodown with ATr. AIolo tov 011 the Russian effort to rewrite the Italian treaty draft on tlie Trieste ques tion. Alr. Alolotov tnade a big concession that the Governor of the proposed Trieste zone should decide wh.en the zone was endangered or its integrity threatened. There are other Trieste issues to be solved but if agreement on police control rau be reached, it is eonsidered possible that other agreements will quickly follow. Mr. Byrnes was reported to be ready to tell delegates today tliat if no solution to Trieste could be found, the conference might as well admit failure. Alr. Byrnes was prepared to suggest that the conference begin exploratory talks on the dennan treaty and tlien dissolve, postponing in dclinitely further discussion 011 sateljite treaties. Today 's session was the lirst "restricted" session, each Minister being attended by only two advisers. Usuallv 45 to 50 artend the meetings.
