Council's Monthly Meeting The monthly 'meeting of the Otaki Borough Council was held on Wednesday night, the Mayor (Mr. C. F. Atmore) presiding. There were also . present: Crs. Young, Gimblett, Hakaraia, Bartosh, Bennett and Cook. Mr. A. Lumley, secretary of the Otaki Brass Band, wrote thanking the council for making a grant towards its funds. It was hoped the band would become an asset to the town. — Received. A letter was received from Mr. J. C. Meyer, suggesting that Arthur Street be widehed as soon as possible. It was stated by the clerk that plans were not yet to hand, and the matter would, therefore, have to be held over till they were available. It was hoped, however, that it would be possible to bring them beforfe the next meeting. A letter was read from Miss Rose Egdell, applying for the position of assistant at the council's office. — Decided that Miss Egdell be appointed. The Horowhenua Rugby Union forwarded £5 18s 5d, the council's share of the takings at football matches piayed on the OtakiDomain during the past season. An application was received from the Otaki Brass Band for permission to hold a shop day on November 22. — Granted. The Otaki Commercial Association wrote seeking assistance in ihiproving the motor camp, it being pointed out that the trees needed attention. — Request acceded to. The traffic inspector reported that the conduct of the people in the borough had been quite good, but suggested that overhanging hedges be given necessary attention. There had been fourteen prosecutions in the district for traffic breaches. The Lands and Survey Department advised that authority was provided for the cancellation "of the reservation over a portion of the motor camp reserve at Otaki Beach, containing four acres. The council was authorised to sell these lands and apply the proceeds to the developinent of the balance of the original reserve. It was pointed out that the copy of the Act was not yet to hand. A letter was received from Mr. L. G. The Mayor stated that in company with Cr. Bennett he had attended the Remembrance Day services at All Saints' Church. * The Inspector of Fire Brigades forwarded nve copies of the annual report of the fire brigades of the Dominion. — Received. Mr. H. Ross Ciark wrote drawing ittention to the bad state of the •oadway at his property. The gateway was blocked and difficulty was oxperienced in getting in and out. This was the sscond occasion he had asked that the matter be attended to. — To have consideration. A letter was received from the Registrar of Naiive Lands, stating that some of the owners of land in the Kaingaraka block had ruplied for loans under the Native Housing Act, and asked that building sites be provided for them. It was ncw proposed to arrange a meeting of owners to discuss the matter. — Received. Mr. C. W. Foster submitted for •ihe council's approval plans of subdivisions on part Makuratawhiti, on behalf of Mrs. Percival, and land n behalf of Mr. L. Howard. The council approved Mrs. Percival's sub-division. but that for Mr. Howard was held over for further coniidcration. On the recommendation of the works committee it was decided that an engineer be procured to give a report on the present water system, and to make recommendauion s for its improvement. The motor camp at Rangiuru came under discussion and it was decided to appoint Mr. "Tiny" Carmont as caretaker, he to take the proceeds, but to be liable for outgoings. Mr. "Sandy" Bruning was appointed to take Mr. Snowdon's position as sanitary contractor during the latter's annual leave. The amended plan for the State houses in Matene Street was approved. It was stated that there "was an area of about 31 acres of first-class land.
