MR. TURNBULL EXPLAINS.
WELLINGTON, Nov. 14. "What civil servants are asking for is a clear statement from Mr. Holland that the policy of his Party will not involve the retrenchmeiit of civil servants," said Mr. ,T. Turnbull, lionorary secretary of the Oombined State Services Committee, today. He said the public relations sub-committee of the conibined organisations of state euiployees had niet this 'liiorning aiul pre pareil this statement: — "Neither Mr. Polson 's letter nor his Press statement provides sucli an assur ance. Our motive in seeking this assurance is not to enibarrass tlie Nation:' I Party .but to .protect. the Jivelihood nf .our menibeTs, which appears to be threatened by the stateinents of which we eomplain." Mr. Turnbull added that as Mr. Polson had resorted to personalities in his replv, tlie conibined organisations had directed him (Mr. Turnbull) to make it clear tliat the letter to Mr. Holland was written and published on behalf of all of them. The central committee comprised representatives of the four railwav organisations, three teachers organisations, post and telegraph employees, Poljce and Public Servants Association."
