BOROUGH AFFAIRS
MEETING OF COUNCIL The usual fortnightly meeting of he Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. The Vlayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) presided and those present were Crs. it. R. Lind, H. Aitchison; J. Curran, E. Perry and C. G. Wishart. Apologies ,vere received from Crs. W. Clayton, J. A. Roach and W. C. Higgie. A circular letter was received advising that under the Local Body Polls Act the next municipal elections would be held during Novemoer, 1947, and thereafter every three years. A report outlining the Fire Service Bill was received and it was deeided to hold discussion over until a later meeting, when a report from the Shannon Fire Brigade would be received. An applieation was made for the transfer of a property in Margaret Street of an approximate area of threc roods 38 perches, and a plan of the section was submitted for the council's approval. On the motion of the Mayor the transfer was granted. A business firm in Palmerston North submitted a sample of a oov1 ered can for use in connection with the town's sanitary arrangements, and following a discussion it was decidccl to obtain 40 if that numoer were availabie. The town clerk (Mr. J. T. Bovisi pointed out that the next meeting of Ihe -council would fall -on the day [before the general election, and [adviscd that the Maori election was being held on Tuesday. CounciUcrs were oi' the opinion that the nexi: meeting should be cancelled and upon the motion being put that procedure was adopted, the ne..t meeting being calfed ioc December 10.
Cr. Lind reported that, in compar.y with the borough foreman, he had carried out an inspection of the waterworks and advised that one -of the intake boxes had been broken, and sand and gra-/el had entered the box. However, the work of having it repaired was put m hand immcdiately and everything was' was functioning perfectly. Cr. Lind also reported that gauze was needed on the intake boxes and, although it was unobtainable during the war years, he thought that it was now availabie. The town clerk was instructed to make the necessary enquiries and if gauze was now availabie, to purchase the required amount. Cr. Curran reported that there was water running from a resi • dence in Grey Street, either irow a broken water pipe or a septic tank. It was deeided to ask the borough foreman to carry out an inspection and have the matter rectified. The town clerk advised that asupply of metal had been or iered for the necessary work in connec,ion with the repairs to footpaths and roadways. Accounts amounting to £169 17s lOd were passed for payment.
