ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETS The monthly meeting of the Horowhenua College Advisory Comrpittee wgs held lgst pjght. There were present: Mr. F. H. Hudgpn (chairman j , Mrs. C. Bartholomew and Messrs. W. G. Ciark, A. C. Kennerley, J. G- Horp, D. P. Todd, E. D. Beii, G. Matthews and.N. A. Byrae ( principal') . Messrs. Hudson and Horn, togethey with Mr. Byrne, were appointed members'of ihe commiitee, to which the Levin Dairy Company will also appoint representaUves, to consider applicanrs fqr the James Smellie Mernorial Bursary. Mr. Byrne reported that he had beep approached by persons inrerested in the formation ' of a filrn society in Levin asking for the use of one of the college rooms for the showing of -films. It was pointed out that the films would be of a high standard and educational vaiue. It was felt that the college should help in any way possiole, and permission was grained subject to there being no obstacles. It was mentionea by Mr: Byrne tpat the annual prize-giving ceremony would take place at tne colr lege on December 12. Principal's Repbrt The prmcipais report read as follows: — "The annual contest for Mr. H. A. Heron's prize for oratory was held on November 8. Mr. H. A. Tomlinson kindly consented to act as judge and his comments were ooth stimulating and heipful. The results of the competition were: — Senior: B. Dumbeii, who spoke on whnston Churchill; junior: A. Armstrong, who spoke on 'The 'Siege of Calais,' Tne test for the prize donated by Mr. E. D. Bell ior general knowledge was field on November 5 -and resulted as follows: — Senior: R. Bennett; junior: R. Whelan. "Sports: A series of cross-country runs was held between tne lootbaii and cricket seasons. Tne mterhouse competition for 'a cup donated by Mr. R. D. Oudd, an old smdent of the college, was won by Hinau House. On October 29 the First Eleven visited Dannevirke tp play tne annual fixture witn Dannevirke High School. Owing to inclement weather the macch had to be abandoned on the second day jf play, when the school was in a very fortunate position anu seemed likely to defeat Danevirke for the first time. The score at the cessation of play was Dannevirke 54 runs and Horowhenua College 69 for four wickets. Cars for the trip were lent by Mrs. Winiata and Messrs. McFarlane and Evans, wnj oravelled with the team. Summer sports are now in full operation. "Art exhibition : The college is indebted to Messrs. C. Thompson and J. Stackhouse for the loan of a valuable collection of New Zealand art, which was displayed in the library on November 6 and 7.- All the classes visited the exhibition and Mr. M. R. Smith spoke to them on appreciation of the pictures. In the afternoon and evening of November 6 the exhibition was opened to the public, whose response was very gratifying. A silver coin collection resulted in the sum of £7 9: being paid into the special fund and Mr. Thompson has suggested that this be used for the purchase of pictures for the college. "Road safety: The officiak responsible for the road safeti campaign visited the college or November 1, and showed a numbei of films in the assembly hall."
