Almost a Frost • •The cold snap over the weekend i.ed many people to believe that a xrost was iikeiy on Sunday night. Dn Friday a heavy coating of snow was well down on the foothills oehind Shannon. However, local gardeners were taking no chances, and many eovered their young piants wiwi newspapers and scraw. Fortunately a slight breeze came up overnight and a frost was averted. Local' Breeder Successful Foiiowmg his recent successes at ihe Wairarapa show, the local oreeder of Southdown stud sheep, Mr. G. W. Munford, of Pretoria Road, added further credit to his hock at the Palmerston North show jver the' weekend. Mr. Munford jbtained first prize with two ewes under eighteen months, a second prize with an ewe over thirty months with lamb at foot, a third prize with a ewe and lamb and was i/ery highly commended for a ram over eighceen months and under ihirty months. A Quiet Weekend v With the number of outside attractions on over the past few days, Shannon had another - very quiet weekend. On Saturday morn- ■ ,ng the streets were almost desert^a. The Levin Racing Club's fixture, which is always a popular iunction for local enthusiasts, attracted many followers. The Palmerston North show also drew its quota away from town. Sporting activities were almost at a standstill on Saturday afternpon, only a icw visiting the bowling greens and mnnis courts. Sunday saw a few more people about, and the attendance on the fields of sport was mmewhat lareer than exnected.
