CONTAGIOUS ABORTION
VACCINATION OF CALVES Ihe vampaign luntrol oi contugiou.s ahortion by calf vacciiialion was eoiiiiiieiicod iu 1948. Tlie nunibers ot ealves vaecinated have iuereased steadily from year to year as show ti by the following iigures: 1948, 18,009; 1944, 40,090; 1945, 110,000; 1940, 160,000, or approximately 50 per eent uf Ihe dairy hoifers iu the UomiiiLon. The results have been consisteiitly good. The 1945 calving returns from 12(50 herds show that there were 2.0 per eent of abortions fi'p'pi all eauses in 1(5,075 j two-year-old hoifers whieli had . beeji.- ! vaecinated as calves, whereas in the previous year there had been 22.8 per eent of abortions in 17,09S unvaceiu- ! ated heifers in the satiie herds. Results j were also available in 19 15 for (5587 I Becoiul pregnant- ies i if heifers vaecinatj ed as calves. In these three-year-old heifers only 2.8 per eent of abortions jOccurred. It therefore appears that the ilnmunity from calf vaceination | lasts through at Jeast two ju-egnancie.s. i So far vaceination has been provided 'free, but as the work has now passed the experiinental stage, the tlovermnent feels that it is only reasonable to make a charge to cover eost of vaeeine and the travelling involved. In consultation with the New Zealand Dairy Board and the Dominion Federation of Farmers' Veterinary Services, Ihe following scale of charges whiclr will apply to all vaccinations carried out after the first of .Tanuary, 1947, have been fixed. Herds with 14 calves or less 1/0 per calf, herds with niore tlian '14 ealves 1/(1 per head for the first 14 calves and 1/8 per head thereafter.
