Low, was flown to Auckland and a delicate operation successfuilv perforxned with every hope of the chiid 's survival. • When the trouble was detected a fast ear journev was made to Wanganui on iMohday for a Karitane Home theatro examination, but the delicacv of the operation necessary was stated to require tlie slcill of a specialist. Medical opinion vvas tliat the only doctor eompetent to perform the oiieration was at j Auckland, and on the babv's return to Hawera arrangements were made immediately for the Ifawera Aero Club 's eabin plane, 'piloted by the club's instructor, Alr. Brian Ifaybittle, to fly the patieut to Auckland. It was then late in the afternoon but the urgencv of the case made the flight imperative and ■Mangere acrodrome was reaehed at 0.40 p.m. After an X-ray exainination an operation that lasted nearly six hours was jjerformed. The parents were infornied subsequently that the baby's vitalitv wum high and there was every hope that tlie operatiou would be a complete suceess.
