Medical opinion vvas tliat the only doctor eompetent to perform the oiieration was at j Auckland, and on the babv's return to Hawera arrangements were made immediately for the Ifawera Aero Club 's eabin plane, 'piloted by the club's instructor, Alr. Brian Ifaybittle, to fly the patieut to Auckland. It was then late in the afternoon but the urgencv of the case made the flight imperative and ■Mangere acrodrome was reaehed at 0.40 p.m. After an X-ray exainination an operation that lasted nearly six hours was jjerformed. The parents were infornied subsequently that the baby's vitalitv wum high and there was every hope that tlie operatiou would be a complete suceess.
