OTAKI SCHOOL MATTERS

REPORT BY HEADMASTER , The monthly report of the headmaster (Mr. James), given to a meeting of the Otaki State School Committee this week, dealt with numerous matters. Mr. James stated that the num- ■ ker on the roll at November 1 was 212 boys and 195 girls, a total of 407. The average attendance to that date was 180 boys and 171 girls, a total of 351 or 86 per cent. The health of the children appeared to be excellent, only two cases of infectious complaints having been reported for the pa^t Week. "The agriculture instructor, Mr. J. J. Stevenson, visited the school recently," continued the report. "He discussed the matter of the new fence around the garden with Messrs. Lumley and Walsh. "Accommodation is still very acute, especially in the lower infant room, and the Maori Trust was approached to see if something could be done in the letting of the school in Convent Road. ArrangementS have been made to take 40 senior children on an educational trip to visit industries in Wellington; it is being organised by the Wellington Junior Chamber of Commerce. Calf judging takes place in the school grounds at 1.30 p.m. on November 20. The school flower show is fixed for November 28; the public is being asked to support this effort by assisting with the prize fund. Mr. Bartosh has given two cricket bats for practice. Two new bats, two balls, a tennis net and a stapler have been received recently, ahd I wish to thank the committee for them. "The gardens, hedges and lawns have been kept in good order, but the boundary fences are still needing attention. The stack of drain pipes has not been removed. The usual quick growth of grass is taking place in the lower playing area, making ball games difficult to play."
