WELLINGTON, Thi? Day. I The Levin Raeing Club, which had been compelled throughout the war periocl to conduct its meetings at Otaki through the splendid co-operation and courtesy of Ihe stewards of the Otaki Maori Racing Club, because its own course at Levin had been taken over by the military aiuhoiities, will veturn to headquarters 011 Saturday, i when the club will conduct its spring meeting there. When the course was handed back by the army to the j club it was not in a fit condition for racing, and to make this possible the club had incurred a big expenditure. The course is now in excellent racing condition ancl accommodation improvements have a,lso been effectecl, whicli should meet with the approval of pations attenciing Saturday 's meeting. , The club's now secretary. To assist il'irowiwiiua raeegoers who intend pi.t ronising the meeting a review of ihe i'o-m of horses engaged at the meoiiiig is given below. It has been found necessary to make provisions for divisions in the Maiden Race. Hokio Hack, Weraroa Haok and Levin Handicap. Win and place betting will opernto at the meeting.
Aiit-r contesting open middle distance cvents. Riverview should annrceiate the class he will compete against in the Highweight Handicap. Ilis form has been encouraging nougli to ensure a strong publi- iolknving 011 Saturday. Voltaire,. the topweight, is well forward and is cxpected to dispute the issue. ' Ilasten is racing into form and an easing in the gc-ing will be to his advantage. Fc reign Coin was oxi-ve4 d to race prominently at the receut Ciaki meeting but did not iive uo t. ; eapectation. He has been cb-Lv. * ; ell 011 ihe tracks and should iv i he loug in reaching the winning lisl. Of the rest of tlie field Maranui! Coek and Tid-Apa are the h.'St. Mar.shali Cook worked well at Trentham yesterday and is regard(■d as a prospect.
i. 'K: Pram and Castlebrae, BoniJort ii u 1 1 Beau Raide. The lavge field in the Maiden Raw. which includes a number of u.iknown quality, will of necessity :mv." thk race "to be run in div1 -.kvns. In spilo of his failure at Qt. ki Grev Piume will again carry strong snoport in the first division. Th; rrciiig he liad at Otaki has ' been bmiclicial and an improved lY.ee can be c-xpected from him. ?vlrst oppnsition is likely to come i'roni Fhature whose second to Master Eaymond in the Trial S'akes at Bulls was a good effort. The best of the others in this divi don should be Grand Affair, Castlebrae and Beau Raide. In the secoiicl division there is nothing ■vi:h a promising outlook, but Masterton and Bulls running points to Bcau Son, Mr. Buzz and Lackamor numiiig good races,
Brackits: Tortago ancl Pollux. The first division of the Weraroa Hack Handicap looks like Sea Fury holding an excellent chance. She is speedy and a grand finisher. The opposition is not strong, which enhanees her prospects. There was solid' support for Moutoa Lord in the Ohakea Hack at Bulls but the best he could do was fourth. Best bf the others might be Balcherrie and Mr. Pym. The second division should provide a better race as some of the best of the field are drawn in this division. With Clyde Bridge, who ran an excellent second to The Stormovik at Bulls, Tortago, a good third to The Denbigh at Bulls, Salut d'Amour and
The Levin Handicap has arawn such a large field that it has been necessary to make provisions to run the race in divisions. At this juncture both divisions have very open appearances. The first division has three form prospects in Master Robin, Royal Victor and Broiefield. while Saludos, Alright and Hormuz are also in the running. • Master Robin has some solid efforts to his credit this term, but luck has not been with him. He looked a picture when out on the tracks at Trentham this morning and with good fortune in the running he should go a good race. Hormuz is unreliable but if he decides to do his best on the day he will dispute the issue. Royal Victor is not wlthout a good winning chance. This son of Siegfried is little short of his best form and I expect him to run a good race. Saludos was beaten by the conditions at the Wellington meeting and the Salmagundi geld- ; ing should be seen to better advan- ! tage on Saturday. Broiefield ran a j great race in the Rangitikei Cupj to beat all but Tremello. He is very j fit and a race should go his- way j shortly. Of the others best form is represented . by • Alright . -and Nanaaki. Bgst form in the second j division is held by Valley Boy, j Hulabaloo, Black Plato and Imperial. Valley Boy, a visitor from the north, has some good perform- j ances in open class to his credit. He j raced well in the northern country j circuit before arriving at Levin. A ; soft track will suit Hulabaloo ! admirably. He is very fit at present — the best he has been for some time. Black Plato is a consistent customer from the Taranaki dis- 1 trict and always a prospect. ' He! seems to thrive on racing. Imperial ' I is improving with racing and; i should not be long in reaching the ; winning list. Of the others Barrage ! reads the best. !
Best form in the Mako Mako Hack Handicap is held by Thc Stormovik, who has come solid with racing. He made easy work of the field in the Ohakea Hack at Bulls, and is sure to go out a staunch favourite. Carmelita has been racing solidly but unluckily. , She has benefited from recent racing and should give a good account of her pace. Tribute is gradually reaching his best and might make matte's interesting on Saturday. Autos..' m, Mysterious Melody, Tudor Ohief and Iron Duke are the pick oi ihe others.
i A repetition of her good form shown at Bulls last week will give i Sparkling Lady a second to none i chance in the Champion Hack
* * ! Handicap. It is expected that Sea I Fury might start in the Mako Mako Hack in preference to this event, but if she starts she will have to be respected. Sergeant Jack is improving with racing over middle distances and a win to his credit would not be out of turn. He should not be troubled with the turning Levin track. Matawene is another hack due to reac.h the winning list any time. The Martarma mare has been racing consistently but unluckily. Prince Wanaka has not been racing kindly of late, but with a strong horseman up might show to advantage.
The open sprint, the J. R. McDonald Memorial, has drawn together some of the best sprinters in this part of the Island and the race is very open. Master Dash is good class and although he has a tough burden he is a good weight carrier and should not be far away when the whips are cracking. The race he had at the Wellington meeting should benefit Peter Robinson, who can also be looked on to give an improved showing. The race Peter Gazelle had at Bulls will do him good and he should show to | better advantage on Saturday. The Grand is a solid customer always j to be respected. Tuis will only need to do it right to dispute the issue. Theocritus, Specialist and Robin's Reward are not out of it, while a lightweight prospect is Cooraclare.
Unu-kcts: Putere and Diclccns, t-yn Vanls and Master Oain, Blank Cheque and .linnv .links, Silver Mascot and Sabuluin. Another big field is set down to 'narade in the concluding event, the i Hokio Hack, a scurry event. i Divisions have also had to be pro- | vided here, but there is a likelihood that sufficient scratchings will obviate -"divisibns.'b In scurry races the smartest horse 'out bf the barrier generally wins. If reserved for -.his event Tortago should be hard :o beat in the first division. Genghiz Khan is also smart at barrier rise as also is Mysterious Melody. Others with prospects are Ifo-Uka and Robeology. The second division should see the smart Shiraz well to the fore. Shiraz has a reputation of being one of the smartest track workers in commission and being quick out of the barrier will no doubt go out a firm favourite. Others with prospects are Malanui, Glen Uruhart, Tudor Chief, Royal Baron and Grey Donne.
