The announcemcnt that it seemed likoly that an Adjpiralty survey sliip would be sent to New Zealand in the very near future to resuine charting and survey work bogun before the wai' by H.M.8. Eudoavour, was made by Mr. W. C. iSmiLh, ISecretary of bho Mariue. Department, at the aunual Harbour Boards ' eonfereuee. llesumption of work had been urged iu a remit from Ihe Bluff Board. The Marine Departmeut had takeu tlie matter up imxuediately the war euded, said Mr. Hmith, and plans for the, work were now being prepared. lie iiointcd out, however, that Ihe cstimated time to complete the coastal survey was 20 years. Mr. T. F. Dovle (Bluff), who urged that the remit should nevertheless still go forward, said he was perturbed to learn that the work Avould take 20 years to complete. It should have begun where it was most urgently needed, in the Soutli Island, aud not in the North Island. Many overseas shipmasters were very eoncerned a-t the age of New Zealand eliarts and the survey. should be under talcen as soon as possible. The remit was carried.
